from the PALI edition of the Marshallese-English Dictionary
The list of English words in the second main section of this dictionary was compiled by computer by tagging key English words in the translations and definitions given for Marshallese words in the first section. It can be of help in two main ways.
First of all, it can help the reader find the Marshallese words that might be used to translate a given English word. It can also help find a familiar word that cannot be remembered at the moment if the general meaning of the word is remembered. In either event, it serves to help find a Marshallese word in the Marshallese-English section.
The list was also compiled with another type of user in mind, the student of Marshallese culture interested in seeing the total set of vocabulary associated with important topics of life in the islands. Such readers can find pulled together in one place many of the words associated with subjects such as fish and fishing methods; breadfruit, pandanus, and coconut culture; other plant names; games; winds, tides, sailing terms, canoe parts; foods, smells, and so forth. These groupings present an avenue to the culture of the islands through the words of its language.
