1. placename. land section, northeast Kahoʻolawe. lit.: place of worship.
2. n. pre-Christian place of worship, shrine; some heiau were elaborately constructed stone platforms, others simple earth terraces. Many are preserved today. Several types are listed below. In Isa. 15.2, heiau is a high place of worship.
